Traditional American tattoos have their origins in traditional sailors' tattoos. Bold lines and simple designs characterize traditional tattoos and these can be traced back to many of the traditional tattooers of the past, such as "Sailor Jerry", a traditional tattoo artist who served in World War 2. This traditional style of tattooing spread across North America and beyond thanks to the military connections and global nature of sailing.
Whilst traditional tattoos were more demonized than other types of tattoos, their reputation gradually changed over the 20th century, eventually becoming accepted mainstream art form. As such, traditional American tattoos continue to be iconic symbols associated with American culture and history.
